APC Dismisses Opposition Coalition Ahead of 2027, Says Nigeria Has Moved Beyond “Years of the Locusts”
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a strong critique of emerging opposition coalitions ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that Nigeria has permanently moved beyond what it described as a “dark and wasteful era” of past governance failures.
In a statement issued on April 20, 2026, the Lagos APC Spokesman, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, warned Nigerians against what he characterised as the re-emergence of “familiar political actors” regrouping under new platforms, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Oladejo argued that many of the figures positioning themselves as agents of change are not new entrants to Nigeria’s political space but individuals who have previously held significant public offices, including roles as governors, ministers, lawmakers, and party leaders.
According to him, their past records in government raise critical questions about their current claims of reform and national rescue.
“These are not outsiders to power. They have occupied strategic positions and controlled vast national resources. Nigerians must ask what they achieved during those periods,” the statement noted.
The APC spokesman further described the opposition coalition as a gathering of “displaced political actors” driven more by ambition than clear ideological direction. He alleged that the alliance lacks internal cohesion and democratic credibility, citing a history of defections and shifting political loyalties among its members.
Oladejo also took aim at what he termed “political opportunism,” warning that rebranded coalitions should not be mistaken for genuine reform movements.
The ruling party maintained that Nigeria has evolved beyond what it called “the old politics of entitlement and power recycling,” asserting that voters are now more discerning and less likely to be influenced by what it described as recycled narratives.
Highlighting the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC stated that ongoing reforms, though challenging, are aimed at addressing longstanding structural issues in the country. It contrasted these efforts with what it described as policy inconsistencies and missed opportunities under previous administrations involving some opposition figures.
“The reforms may be difficult, but they are necessary and forward-looking,” the statement said, adding that the 2027 elections would serve as a defining moment for leadership accountability in Nigeria.
The party concluded that the country would not return to what it repeatedly referred to as the “years of the locusts,” a phrase used to symbolise past governance failures, and urged Nigerians to remain vigilant ahead of the next electoral cycle.
