Customs Comptroller Kaila Begins Tenure with Strategic Security Engagements at Seme Border

The Customs Area Controller of the Seme Area Command, Comptroller Abdullahi Kaila, has commenced his tenure with a series of familiarisation visits to key security agencies along the Lagos-Abidjan corridor, underscoring the importance of inter-agency collaboration in safeguarding Nigeria’s critical border operations and enhancing trade efficiency.

Comptroller Abdullahi Kaila, the newly deployed Customs Area Controller of the Seme Area Command, has initiated his leadership with strategic visits to sister security agencies operating along the Lagos-Abidjan economic corridor.

During a visit to the 243 Recce Battalion, Ibereko Barracks in Badagry on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, Kaila stated that the purpose of the engagement was to strengthen cooperation and build synergy necessary for the effective discharge of his statutory responsibilities.

Describing the Seme border as a vital gateway for regional trade and movement, the Comptroller emphasised its strategic economic importance. He noted that the high volume of cross-border trade, human traffic, and commercial activities makes the corridor both sensitive and critical to Nigeria’s economy.

Kaila stressed that sustained collaboration, intelligence sharing, and mutual support among security agencies are essential to maintaining order and facilitating legitimate trade in the region. He added that enhanced synergy would contribute significantly to economic stability and improve the well-being of residents in border communities.

He also called on relevant agencies to deepen cooperation in achieving their shared mandate of securing the nation’s borders while promoting lawful trade.

Responding, the Commanding Officer of the 243 Recce Battalion, Lt. Colonel Ambrose Ikoro, acknowledged the longstanding partnership between the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Customs Service. He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to strengthening that relationship.

Ikoro noted that the Chief of Army Staff had directed units operating in border areas to support all relevant security agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Service, in ensuring national security objectives are met.

As part of the familiarisation tour, Comptroller Kaila also visited the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base in Badagry, the 15 Field Engineer Regiment in Topo, Badagry, and the NAFDAC office at Seme. The visits, according to the Command, reflect a broader commitment to enhancing inter-agency cooperation and eliminating trade bottlenecks along the corridor.

The engagement marks a proactive start to Kaila’s tenure, signalling a focus on collaboration as a key strategy for effective border management and economic growth.
