Lagos Politics Has Come of Age, Says Oluremi Tinubu as GAC Presents Obafemi Hamzat as APC Consensus Candidate
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has declared that Lagos politics has “come of age,” following the presentation of Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the state’s governorship race.
Dr Hamzat was formally presented to the First Lady by members of the Lagos State Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), led by its chairman, Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, in what was described as a symbolic endorsement and consultation.
Speaking during the visit, Senator Tinubu commended the GAC for its decision, likening the body to an electoral college and praising the peaceful consensus-building process.
“Politically, Lagos State has always been at the forefront, showcasing leadership to the rest of Nigeria. This peaceful consensus shows that we are maturing politically and have indeed come of age,” she said.
She also reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that political power ultimately rests with God and is bestowed according to His will.
The First Lady further lauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his leadership, offering prayers for a smooth transition as his administration winds down.
“You have done your best, and I pray that as you begin to transition, God will guide and keep you,” she added.
Earlier, Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that Hamzat’s emergence followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, including aspirants who had shown interest in contesting the governorship seat.
He revealed that 25 members of the GAC unanimously endorsed Hamzat as the party’s consensus candidate and that he had already been presented to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who gave his approval.
“As a respected member of the GAC, we have come to present him to you for your motherly blessing and counsel,” the governor said.
Also speaking, Prince Olusi emphasized the cultural significance of seeking the First Lady’s endorsement, noting that women play an institutional role in governance within Yoruba tradition.
In her remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, praised the First Lady’s contributions to national development and her support for the administration’s programmes.
“You are indeed a strong woman, and we are proud of your efforts in supporting the President and advancing impactful initiatives across the country,” she said.
Orelope-Adefulire subsequently presented Dr Hamzat to the First Lady as the APC’s consensus candidate for the Lagos governorship race.
