LASTMA Probes Alleged ₦100,000 Extortion on Coastal Road, Invites Accuser to Present Evidence

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched a full-scale investigation into allegations that its officers extorted ₦100,000 from commercial bus drivers along Lagos’ Coastal Road, pledging strict disciplinary action if any personnel are found culpable.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it is taking seriously a viral allegation circulating on social media that some of its officers demanded ₦100,000 from commercial drivers before releasing impounded vehicles along Coastal Road.

The claim, reportedly shared on Facebook by a platform identified as “Objectv Media,” quoted an individual named Tosin, who alleged that the incident began on an unspecified Monday and involved the arrest of multiple commercial buses.

Reacting to the development, LASTMA, through its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, firmly denied condoning any form of extortion, misconduct or abuse of office by its officials.

The agency emphasized that it operates under strict ethical and professional standards, noting that any proven case of wrongdoing would attract severe sanctions in line with established regulations.

According to the statement, the management has already commenced a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the allegations. It assured members of the public that due process would be followed and that any officer found guilty would face the full weight of the law.

As part of the probe, LASTMA invited the accuser, Tosin, to appear before the General Manager at the agency’s headquarters in Oshodi with verifiable evidence to support the claims.

The authority reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and public trust, while urging residents to report any misconduct through official and verified channels.

LASTMA maintained that it remains dedicated to promoting fairness, orderliness and respect for the rights of all road users across Lagos roads.
