Nigeria Inaugurates National IPv6 Council to Accelerate Digital Transformation

Nigeria has taken a major step toward strengthening its digital infrastructure with the inauguration of the National Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) Council, a move aimed at positioning the country for the next phase of global internet evolution.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Lagos Marriott Hotel Ikeja on Thursday, brought together top regulators, industry leaders, and key stakeholders in internet governance, all aligned on advancing Nigeria’s transition to next-generation internet infrastructure.

The event was led by the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida. Also in attendance were the Commission’s Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, Engr. Abraham Oshadami, and Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, Barr. Rimini Makama.

Members of the newly constituted council were formally sworn in during the ceremony. They include National President Muhammed Rudman, National Vice President Dr. Chris Uwaje, council member Tony Emoekpere, and President of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association, Adesola Akinsanya, who also serves on the council.

The establishment of the council underscores Nigeria’s commitment to modernising its internet ecosystem as the global community steadily migrates from IPv4 to IPv6—an advanced protocol designed to deliver enhanced security, faster connectivity, and the scalability required to support billions of connected devices.

Industry observers note that the council will play a pivotal role in driving policy direction, advocacy, and technical preparedness for widespread IPv6 adoption across both public and private sectors.

The initiative is expected to accelerate broadband penetration, strengthen cybersecurity frameworks, enable smart city development, and improve Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.

With the ongoing evolution of internet technologies worldwide, the inauguration signals Nigeria’s readiness to adapt and take a leadership role in shaping the future of digital innovation.
