Oyo Teachers’ Endwell Scheme Pays ₦1.7bn to 6,300 Beneficiaries in Four Years

The Teachers’ Social Security Scheme, popularly known as the Endwell Scheme, has disbursed over ₦1.7 billion to more than 6,300 teachers and their next-of-kin between 2022 and 2026, underscoring renewed financial stability and sustained welfare support for educators in Oyo State.

The disclosure was made during the 14th State (Biennial) General Meeting of the scheme held at the Teachers’ House, Oluyole Estate, Ibadan, where stakeholders reviewed its performance and long-term sustainability.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Comrade Obasola Elijah Olayiwola, while presenting the management report, said the scheme has maintained a strong financial position and continues to meet its obligations to members without disruption.

He attributed the increase in benefit payouts to a rising number of retiring teachers and an expanding subscriber base, driven partly by the recruitment of new teachers under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.

According to him, “The Endwell Scheme remains a dependable pillar of support for teachers. The steady rise in beneficiaries reflects both growth in membership and our unwavering commitment to contributors’ welfare.”

At a parallel biennial meeting of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Oyo State Wing, the union’s chairman, Comrade Raji Oladimeji Ismael, described the latest financial figures as evidence that the scheme has entered a new phase of stability and relevance.

He noted that despite initial skepticism at its inception three decades ago, the scheme has endured and consistently delivered benefits without any record of financial collapse.

“This milestone confirms that the difficult days are behind us. The scheme has weathered challenges and is now stronger and more reliable than ever,” he said.

Ismael explained that the Endwell Scheme was established at a time when many retired teachers faced hardship due to delayed gratuities and pensions, leaving them vulnerable to financial and psychological stress.

He added that the initiative has since evolved into a critical social security system, providing Non-Refundable Terminal Benefits (NRTB) and death-in-service compensation to thousands of beneficiaries across the state.

A major highlight of the event was the recognition of founding members and early contributors credited with establishing the scheme. Those honoured included Comrade Anusat Babatunde Amuda, Comrade Ibrahim Bolomope, Comrade Elijah Olu Abiala, Comrade Suleiman Adediran, Mr. Tade Ipadeola, Mrs. J.L. Latunji, and Alhaji Oladiti Oladapo.

The union described them as visionaries whose foresight laid the foundation for what has become a vital welfare structure for teachers in Oyo State.

Commending both past and current administrators, Ismael also praised contributors for their consistent participation and timely payment of dues, which he said has sustained the scheme’s growth.

He urged newly recruited teachers to enroll, emphasizing that the Endwell Scheme remains one of the most reliable welfare mechanisms available to educators in the state.
