Police Week Day 3: Lagos Command Sensitises Drivers on Electoral Offences, Cultism, GBV, and Road Safety
The Lagos State Police Command, on Day Three of activities marking the 2026 National Police Week, conducted a targeted sensitisation programme for drivers at Ojota Motor Park, focusing on electoral violence, cultism, gender-based violence, and road safety as part of efforts to enhance public awareness and security.
The engagement, held on April 1, 2026, brought together commercial drivers and transport stakeholders in a strategic outreach aimed at addressing critical issues affecting public safety and national development.
Leading the session, the Commissioner of Police, CP Fatai Tijani, delivered a detailed lecture on the provisions of the Electoral Act, highlighting key electoral offences and their implications for Nigeria’s democratic process.
He identified offences such as vote buying and selling, electoral violence and thuggery, ballot box snatching, destruction of election materials, impersonation, multiple voting, and intimidation of voters, electoral officials, and security personnel. The Commissioner stressed that such acts undermine the credibility of elections and pose a threat to democratic stability.
He urged drivers, who play a significant role in the movement of people and materials during election periods, to uphold the law and actively support peaceful electoral processes.
Also speaking, the Area Commander, Area M Command, ACP Tokunbo Abaniwonda, addressed participants on the dangers of cultism, calling for increased vigilance and collaboration with the police to combat the growing menace.
In a separate session, the Officer-in-Charge of the Gender Unit, ACP Oluwatoyin Kazeem, sensitised attendees on gender-based violence (GBV), outlining its various forms, consequences, and the need for victims and witnesses to report incidents promptly.
Similarly, the Officer-in-Charge, Motorpol 1, CSP Alli Yemisi, emphasised the importance of road safety, urging drivers to adhere strictly to traffic rules, maintain discipline, and adopt responsible driving habits to reduce accidents on Lagos roads.
The programme underscored the Lagos State Police Command’s commitment to proactive policing through continuous public enlightenment and stakeholder engagement.
The Command reiterated that sustained collaboration with the public remains essential in promoting safety, strengthening trust, and ensuring a secure environment across the state.
