Sterling Bank, Partners Launch Nationwide Cleanup Drive to Tackle Environmental Pollution

Sterling Bank, in collaboration with Sterling One Foundation, the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Sunbeth, and other partners, has unveiled a nationwide environmental initiative tagged The Great Nigeria Cleanup, aimed at combating waste pollution and promoting sustainable environmental practices across the country.

The cleanup exercise, scheduled for April 25, 2026, will be carried out simultaneously across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, mobilising citizens in states including Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Osun, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Abia, Enugu, Imo, Sokoto, Kano, Benue, Plateau, Kogi, and Katsina.

Aligned with the United Nations Decade of Action, the initiative seeks to drive community-led efforts to reduce plastic waste, improve sanitation, and restore environmental health through collective action involving government agencies, private organisations, and local volunteers.

Chief Operating Officer of Sterling Bank, Temitayo Adegoke, described the initiative as a platform to foster shared responsibility among Nigerians. She noted that the campaign is designed not only to clean the environment but also to instill a lasting culture of environmental stewardship.

Also speaking, Chief Executive Officer of Sterling One Foundation, Olapeju Ibekwe, emphasised that the project goes beyond sanitation, highlighting its role in promoting dignity, public wellbeing, and citizen participation in environmental protection.

The organisers said the initiative comes at a critical time as Nigeria grapples with increasing waste management challenges and urban pollution, stressing that collaborative action remains key to achieving long-term impact.

They urged Nigerians to actively participate in the exercise, describing the cleanup campaign as a national call to action towards building a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
