Government Secondary School Zing, Family Support Programme Emerge Champions as 26th Milo Basketball Championship Tips Off
The 26th edition of the Milo Basketball Championship has officially commenced with the conclusion of the Savannah Conference regional finals held at the Sanni Abacha Indoor Sports Hall in Kano.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mrs. Opeyemi Jaiyeola, Category Development Manager, represented the Category Manager, Mr. Gilbert Tweneboah, who highlighted the remarkable growth of the championship since its inception in 1999.
According to him, the competition, which began with fewer than 500 participating schools, has evolved into a nationwide sporting platform engaging more than 12,000 schools annually.
“This growth is not by chance. It’s a result of dedication, consistency, and the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to discover their strength and reach their full potential,” he stated.
In the girls’ final, Government Secondary School Zing from Taraba State defeated Government Girls College Unity School, Bauchi, 53–43 in an entertaining contest. Happy Sylvester emerged as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) after an outstanding display that saw her score 38 points for the Taraba side.
The boys’ final produced another thrilling encounter as Family Support Programme School, Katsina, edged Government Secondary School Numan of Adamawa State 64–63. Friday Emmanuel was named the boys’ MVP after contributing 22 vital points to secure victory for the Katsina team.
The championship attracted dignitaries from the Kano State Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, media organisations, representatives of the Olympic Commission, as well as partners including the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF), Nigeria Colleges of Education Games Association (NCSF), and FIBA.
Following the Savannah Conference finals, the competition will now move to the Central Region Finals scheduled to hold at the Indoor Sports Hall of Mogadishu Barracks, where teams will battle for qualification to the National Finals slated for Lagos in July.
