LASTMA Arrests Truck Driver After Container Crushes Bus, Injures Female POS Operator in Lagos

A devastating road accident involving a 40-foot containerized truck on Monday left a female Point of Sale (POS) operator critically injured and caused massive destruction at Second Rainbow inward Oshodi, Lagos.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the heavily loaded articulated truck lost control while moving along the service lane near the Police Tactical Team Station before overturning onto a commercial mini shuttle bus and adjoining roadside shops.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle, causing the container-laden truck to veer off its lane and crash violently into the commercial area.

A female POS operator working under a canopy within the vicinity reportedly sustained severe injuries to both legs during the incident. She was immediately rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital by officers of the Police Tactical Team stationed in the area.

LASTMA officials swiftly arrived at the scene to manage traffic, coordinate rescue operations and secure the affected corridor in collaboration with security agencies and emergency responders.

The truck driver was subsequently apprehended by LASTMA operatives and handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Emergency recovery teams also deployed a tow truck to evacuate the fallen articulated vehicle and the damaged mini bus from the road, while officers from the Orile-Iganmu Police Division commenced documentation and preliminary investigations into the crash.

Despite the severity of the accident and the extensive damage recorded around the scene, traffic movement along the corridor was said to have remained largely uninterrupted due to prompt intervention by LASTMA personnel.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged operators of articulated vehicles and logistics companies to ensure routine mechanical inspections of heavy-duty trucks before putting them on the road.

He stressed that poor vehicle maintenance, particularly brake failure and compromised safety systems, continues to pose a major threat to lives and infrastructure across Lagos State.

Bakare-Oki also called on transport stakeholders to strictly comply with established safety regulations and operational standards to prevent avoidable tragedies on Lagos roads.
