LASWA Intensifies Safety Inspections Across Lagos Ferry Terminals, Seizes 120 Faulty Life Jackets

The Lagos State Waterways Authority has intensified safety inspections across major ferry terminals and jetties in Lagos State as part of efforts to strengthen compliance with waterways safety regulations and improve operational standards.

The enforcement exercise, carried out across terminals including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex, and Coconut, focused primarily on vessel seaworthiness and compliance with life jacket safety requirements.

During the inspections, officials seized and removed 120 damaged life jackets from circulation, describing the move as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate safety risks and ensure passenger protection on Lagos waterways.

According to LASWA, the inspections revealed varying levels of compliance among boat operators. While several operators were found to have met the required safety standards, some vessels were identified as needing repairs to attain full seaworthiness.

The Authority stressed that strict enforcement of safety protocols, particularly regarding vessel conditions and the use of certified life jackets, remains non-negotiable.

LASWA further warned that enforcement operations would continue across all ferry terminals and jetties in the state to ensure total adherence to safety regulations.

The agency reiterated that all operators are legally required to maintain seaworthy boats and provide passengers with certified and functional life jackets at all times.

Reaffirming its commitment to safer waterways transportation, LASWA stated that it remains focused on building a more reliable, secure, and properly regulated water transport system in Lagos State.
