Nigeria-South Africa Chamber Urges Calm Amid Rising Unrest in South Africa

The Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce has called for calm, restraint, and constructive dialogue following recent unrest in parts of South Africa that has disrupted communities, businesses, and livelihoods.

In a statement released on Friday, the Chamber expressed concern over the impact of the disturbances on citizens, particularly members of the Nigerian community and other African nationals living in South Africa. It also highlighted the negative implications for South African businesses and the broader investment climate.

The Chamber noted that both Nigeria and South Africa share a long-standing relationship rooted in mutual respect, trade, cooperation, and a common vision for African prosperity, stressing that such values must remain central during periods of tension.

According to the statement, moments of crisis require restraint and peaceful engagement from all stakeholders, including government authorities, community leaders, civil society groups, and citizens.

The organization urged authorities to ensure the protection and safety of all residents regardless of nationality, emphasizing that respect for the rule of law is critical to sustaining trust, peace, and stability.

The Chamber also called for stronger collaboration between Nigerian and South African authorities to address the underlying causes of the unrest, prevent further escalation, and strengthen mechanisms for conflict resolution and social cohesion.

It added that it remains committed to working with relevant partners to promote unity, economic resilience, and stronger bilateral relations between both nations.
