Ibeju-Lekki LG Moves to Boost Internally Generated Revenue Through Technology and Administrative Reforms
The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has reiterated the need to strengthen the council’s internally generated revenue (IGR) system, saying the rapidly developing local government must build a sustainable revenue base to support governance and infrastructure development amid increasing economic activities and investments.
The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, on Tuesday convened a technical session involving Area Officers, Revenue Officers, Budget officials, and technical partners to review the council’s revenue collection and administration framework.
The meeting, which focused on identifying opportunities and addressing challenges within the local government’s revenue system, examined strategies for improving revenue generation and enhancing administrative efficiency.
Speaking during the session, Olowa observed that despite the significant growth and economic expansion taking place across Ibeju-Lekki, revenue performance has not fully reflected the scale of opportunities available within the local government area.
He challenged Area Officers and revenue personnel to adopt innovative approaches capable of unlocking the council’s revenue potential, stressing that a local government of Ibeju-Lekki’s strategic importance should not depend heavily on statutory allocations.
According to the chairman, federal allocations should primarily be reserved for capital and developmental projects, while a robust internally generated revenue system should provide the resources needed for effective and sustainable service delivery.
The session featured presentations by the Revenue Coordinator and Revenue Officers, who provided an overview of year-to-date revenue performance, including a comparative analysis of budget projections and actual collections.
Officials from the Budget Department also presented findings from the local government’s taxpayer enumeration exercise, highlighting ongoing efforts to expand the taxpayer database and improve revenue planning and forecasting.
As part of efforts to modernise revenue administration, technology partners showcased digital solutions designed to improve transparency, accountability and operational efficiency.
Lego Consult unveiled the Ibeju-Lekki Street Naming Portal, while Centrify presented the Ibeju-Lekki Revenue Collection and Administration System, both of which are expected to support improved service delivery and revenue management.
The engagement also highlighted the services of the Ibeju-Lekki Marriage Registry, where residents can contract legally recognised statutory marriages within the local government.
Participants at the session noted that with Ibeju-Lekki emerging as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing investment destinations, strengthening institutions and governance systems remains critical to sustaining development and ensuring the local government is adequately prepared for future growth.
