NBA Eti-Osa Unveils 2026 Law Week, Focuses on Profitability, Ethics and Human Rights in Legal Practice
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Eti-Osa Branch, has announced plans for its 2026 Law Week, bringing together legal practitioners, policymakers, academics, business leaders and human rights advocates to examine the evolving role of the legal profession in a rapidly changing global environment.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Eti-Osa Branch, Mr. Olanrewaju Obadina, has formally unveiled the Branch's 2026 Law Week programme, describing the annual event as a strategic platform for addressing contemporary challenges confronting the legal profession.
Speaking during a press briefing to launch the event, Obadina said the 2026 Law Week will be held under the theme, "Law as Business, Law as Justice: Profitability, Ethics and Human Rights in a Changing World."
According to him, the theme reflects the realities of modern legal practice, including technological disruption, evolving business models, increasing demands for access to justice and growing concerns about the protection of human rights.
He noted that the week-long programme will provide an opportunity for legal practitioners to explore how they can maintain commercially viable practices while upholding professional ethics and safeguarding justice.
"The legal profession is evolving rapidly, and there is a need to examine how practitioners can remain commercially viable without compromising their obligations to justice, ethics and human rights," Obadina stated.
Activities marking the 2026 Law Week will begin with the press briefing and continue with a range of programmes aimed at promoting professional development, wellness, spirituality and intellectual engagement.
As part of the activities, Muslim members of the Branch will hold a special prayer session on Friday, June 5, while a Health Walk designed to encourage physical fitness and strengthen professional camaraderie is scheduled for Saturday, June 6. Christian members of the Branch will also participate in a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, June 7.
The Law Week will be officially declared open on June 9 by the Chief Judge of Lagos State, .
A major highlight of the opening ceremony will be a keynote address by , whose participation underscores the international relevance of the conference theme and the importance of global conversations on the future of legal practice.
Following the keynote address, six Attorneys-General from Nigeria's South-West region will participate in a panel discussion to interrogate issues arising from the presentation and their implications for legal practice and governance.
The opening day will also feature a panel session involving chairmen of seven NBA branches in Lagos State, alongside a special session on Women and the Law to be anchored by .
Attention will subsequently shift to Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), with discussions to be chaired by renowned legal scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, , alongside Mrs. Sola Oshodi-John, Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators.
The session will explore how arbitration can enhance commercial certainty, attract investment and improve access to justice.
Deans of leading Faculties of Law across Nigeria are also expected to participate in a high-level discussion on legal education and the future of the profession.
Another major attraction of the Law Week will be a session on Real Estate Law and Practice, where emerging opportunities and challenges in Nigeria's property sector will be examined. The keynote address at the session will be delivered by .
On June 10, discussions will focus on Legal Technology and Innovation, with participants examining the impact of artificial intelligence, automation and digital transformation on legal services and professional practice.
The session is expected to generate insights into how lawyers can remain competitive, relevant and ethically compliant in an increasingly technology-driven environment.
The day's programme will conclude with a session on Emerging Law Firms, to be anchored by .
The 2026 Law Week will culminate in a grand Law Dinner, bringing together members of the Bench, Bar, government, academia and the business community to celebrate excellence, service and outstanding contributions to the legal profession.
Reaffirming the Branch's commitment to advancing legal scholarship, promoting the rule of law, defending human rights and fostering professional excellence, Obadina said the event is designed to facilitate meaningful conversations that will shape the future of legal practice while reinforcing the profession's enduring responsibility to justice and society.
He called on members of the legal community, corporate organisations, government institutions, academics, civil society groups and the media to actively participate in the programme.
