ADC Condemns Oshodi Flood Disaster, Demands Urgent Government Intervention

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the devastating flood that submerged parts of Oshodi in Lagos on Sunday, calling on the Lagos State Government and relevant emergency agencies to provide immediate relief to victims while taking urgent steps to prevent future flooding.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the devastating flood that affected Oshodi, Lagos, on Sunday, June 28, 2026, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the urgent need for improved drainage infrastructure and proactive flood management across the state.

In a statement issued on Monday by the party's candidate for Oshodi-Isolo I Federal Constituency, Akintunde Waheed Adetunji, FCA, MBA, LLB, the ADC expressed sympathy with residents, traders and families whose homes, businesses and means of livelihood were destroyed by the flood.

According to Adetunji, no Nigerian should be forced to suffer the loss of property and peace of mind because of poor drainage systems, blocked canals and inadequate flood control measures.

He called on the Lagos State Government, the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Chairman and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to take immediate steps to address the situation and provide support for affected residents.

Specifically, the ADC urged the authorities to provide immediate relief materials and assistance to flood victims, intensify desilting of drainage channels and canals ahead of the peak of the rainy season, and strictly enforce environmental sanitation laws to curb indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters and waterways.

Adetunji stressed that Oshodi, being one of the busiest commercial and transportation hubs in Lagos, deserves better urban planning, effective drainage infrastructure and adequate protection against recurring flood disasters.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this unfortunate incident. Lagos must act now, and particularly the Oshodi Local Government Chairman must take urgent action to prevent a recurrence," he said.

The ADC maintained that sustained investment in drainage infrastructure, environmental sanitation and emergency preparedness remains essential to protecting lives and property as the rainy season intensifies.
