MasterChef Nigeria Top 5 Challenge Ends Derry’s Journey as David Wins Dish of the Day

LAGOS, Nigeria – The competition intensified on MasterChef Nigeria as the Top 5 home cooks faced a high-pressure challenge that tested their creativity, culinary skills, and ability to elevate traditional Nigerian street food into fine dining dishes. At the end of the emotionally charged episode, contestant Derry was eliminated from the competition, while David emerged as the winner of the coveted Dish of the Day title.

The challenge, judged by the MasterChef panel alongside guest judge Chef Bukie Akinmade, required contestants to reimagine popular Buka and street food classics while preserving the authenticity, flavours, and cultural essence that define Nigerian cuisine.

Determined to showcase her heritage through food, Derry approached the challenge with a focus on tradition and tribal influences. However, the judges concluded that her dishes fell short of the high standards expected at this stage of the competition. Following deliberations, she became the latest contestant to leave the MasterChef Nigeria kitchen.

Joining Derry in the bottom three were Favy and Fads, both of whom faced anxious moments during the judging process.

Despite holding an immunity pin, Favy opted not to use it, expressing confidence in her dishes. However, her Dubai Pistachio Puff Puff was criticized for being undercooked, placing her among the contestants at risk of elimination.

Fads also encountered challenges in the kitchen after presenting two starter-style dishes rather than more substantial meals. Her cook was further complicated by a kitchen accident when she accidentally plunged her hands into hot oil. Although visibly shaken, she continued cooking and completed her dishes. The judges ultimately praised the quality of her chicken preparation, securing her place in the competition.

While some contestants struggled under pressure, David and Isabella impressed the judges with standout performances.

Isabella earned praise for delivering a simple yet effective dish that successfully captured the spirit of the challenge. Judges commended her ability to elevate familiar street food while maintaining its authenticity and flavour profile.

David, however, emerged as the day's strongest performer. His dishes impressed the judges with their presentation, balance, and depth of flavour. They noted his ability to transform beloved street food favourites into refined culinary creations without losing their cultural identity.

His performance earned him the Dish of the Day award, further strengthening his position as one of the leading contenders in the competition.

With only four contestants remaining, the race to the MasterChef Nigeria title is becoming increasingly intense. In the next episode, the Top 4 will face an Afro-Italian challenge, creating two fusion dishes for a chance to win a major prize and move one step closer to the grand finale.
