 MILO Recycling Initiative Recovers Over One Million Wrappers Through Lagos Schools

LAGOS, Nigeria – More than 60,000 pupils from 100 primary schools across Lagos State recovered over one million used MILO wrappers as part of the MILO Elevate Recycling Initiative, a sustainability programme designed to promote environmental awareness and responsible waste management among children.

The initiative, organised to commemorate World Environment Day 2026, combined environmental education with a school-based recycling competition. Participating pupils not only collected used MILO wrappers but also received lessons on proper waste disposal, recycling practices, and the principles of a circular economy.

Speaking at the award ceremony held to mark World Environment Day, Gilbert Tweneboah-Koduah, Category Manager for MILO at Nestlé Nigeria Plc, said the programme reflects the brand's commitment to raising environmentally conscious future leaders.

“At MILO, we believe that nurturing children includes helping them build the values, habits and mindset needed to thrive and make a positive contribution to society,” he said. “Through the Elevate Recycling Initiative, we are encouraging children to understand that small everyday actions can create meaningful environmental impact. Just as we have inspired generations of future sports champions, we are proud to contribute to raising future climate champions.”

For more than two decades, MILO has supported youth development through grassroots sports programmes. The Elevate Recycling Initiative expands that commitment by promoting environmental responsibility and sustainable habits among young people.

Also speaking on the programme, Stephen Avoseh, Deputy Director of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), highlighted the role of schools in driving environmental awareness.

“Implementing this initiative through schools creates an opportunity for children to learn about environmental responsibility and share these lessons with their families and communities. Schools play an important role in building lasting awareness and positive environmental habits,” he said.

The programme also had a noticeable impact on participating pupils. One of the beneficiaries, Treasure John, said the initiative helped her better understand the consequences of improper waste disposal, including environmental pollution and flooding, while motivating her to adopt more responsible waste management practices.

As part of efforts to demonstrate the value of recycling and upcycling, Rotaract District 9112 transformed the recovered wrappers into 1,013 reusable items, including school bags, lunch bags and pencil cases. The items were donated to participating schools and presented to outstanding pupils during the awards ceremony.

Organisers said the success of the initiative underscores the importance of environmental education and community participation in advancing sustainable waste management practices. It also supports Nestlé Nigeria’s broader sustainability agenda aimed at promoting circularity, environmental stewardship, and a cleaner future for generations to come.
