Babcock University Awards PhD in Law to SAN Monday Ubani, Capping Decades of Determination and Resilience
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, has added another milestone to his distinguished legal career after earning a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law from Babcock University. The award, conferred during the university's convocation ceremony on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, marks the culmination of a lifelong academic ambition shaped by perseverance, sacrifice, resilience and faith.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, has been awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree in Law by Babcock University, bringing to fruition a lifelong academic pursuit that spans several decades.
The conferment of the doctorate at the university's convocation ceremony on Tuesday represents the completion of an educational journey marked by determination, personal sacrifice, professional excellence and unwavering commitment to scholarship.
Born in Awomukwu, in present-day Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, Dr. Ubani began his academic journey at Awomukwu Primary School in the late 1970s, where he distinguished himself as an exceptional pupil.
His academic brilliance became evident when he emerged as one of only two candidates from his school to obtain credit passes in the First School Leaving Certificate Examination conducted by the then Imo State Government before the creation of Abia State.
Recognising his potential, his headmaster, Mr. Ahia of Oboro, reportedly urged that the young Ubani should never be denied the opportunity to pursue formal education, describing him as a child destined for greatness.
Despite his father's initial desire for him to become a company-trained mechanic with Dunlop Nigeria Limited, circumstances altered the course of his life after he missed the opportunity to take up the apprenticeship due to an unforeseen delay in the delivery of his school certificate.
The intervention of his uncle, Mr. Reuben Agwu, who reminded the family of the headmaster's advice, ensured that Ubani continued his education instead of pursuing vocational training.
He subsequently gained admission into Ariam Secondary School before proceeding to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1983 to study Political Science.
After completing two years in the department, Ubani made a life-changing decision to abandon Political Science and begin afresh as a first-year Law student in 1985, inspired by the exploits of the late legal icon and human rights advocate, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN.
The decision required him to forfeit two years of academic work, but it ultimately paved the way for a distinguished legal career.
He graduated from the University of Nigeria in 1989 with a Second Class Upper Division in Law and proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, where he also graduated with a Second Class Upper Division in 1990. He was reportedly the only graduate from the university's 1989 Law Class to achieve that distinction in the 1990 Nigerian Law School set.
Following his National Youth Service Corps programme in Kano State, Ubani earned a Master's Degree in Comparative Constitutional Law from the University of Lagos.
Although he intended to pursue a doctoral degree immediately, family responsibilities, marriage, raising children and the demands of legal practice delayed that ambition.
Over the years, he built an accomplished legal career, becoming a respected constitutional lawyer, public affairs commentator and eventually attaining the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). He also received honorary doctorate degrees from two institutions in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession and society.
Determined to fulfil his long-held academic aspiration, he enrolled in the PhD in Law programme at Babcock University in December 2021.
However, tragedy struck shortly afterwards with the death of his father in January 2022 at the age of 101. As his father's only surviving child, he suspended his studies to organise the burial and fulfil family obligations.
Following the burial in April 2022, returning to academic work proved challenging until he received encouragement from members of the university's academic staff, including Professor Titilayo Owolabi, Professor Dorcas Odunaike and Dr. Ibe Moses, who urged him to resume and complete the programme.
While nearing the completion of his doctoral research, Ubani suffered another personal loss with the death of his mother in 2025 at the age of 90. Despite the emotional setback, he remained committed to completing his thesis after her burial in December 2025.
His perseverance ultimately culminated in the successful completion of all academic requirements for the award of the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Law.
The achievement adds another academic distinction to an already distinguished legal career and stands as a testament to the rewards of resilience, lifelong learning and dedication to excellence.
Family members, friends, colleagues and associates have described the accomplishment as a celebration of faith, discipline and perseverance, noting that Dr. Ubani's journey from a rural primary school in Abia State to the pinnacle of legal scholarship serves as an inspiration to aspiring professionals across Nigeria.
