First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Donates N2bn to Revive Akwete Textile Production in Abia

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has pledged the Federal Government's support for the revitalisation of the historic Akwete handwoven textile industry, announcing a donation of N2 billion for the development of the Akwete production site in Abia State as part of efforts to preserve Nigeria's cultural heritage and promote indigenous textile production.

The First Lady made the announcement during a visit to Akwete, the historic community renowned for producing the iconic handmade Akwete fabric, where she emphasised the importance of preserving Nigeria's cultural identity through indigenous crafts.

Speaking with traditional weavers and community members, Senator Tinubu described the centuries-old weaving tradition as a priceless cultural heritage that should be safeguarded and passed on to future generations.

She stressed the need to encourage young Nigerians to embrace indigenous culture and traditional attire, noting that African clothing remains an important symbol of national identity.

"Our young people need to be encouraged to appreciate our traditions and cultural outfits. Our culture defines who we are, and we must preserve it for posterity," she said.

The First Lady praised the women of Akwete for sustaining the craft through generations, describing their work as one rooted in love, patience, endurance and spiritual commitment.

She also expressed satisfaction at seeing younger members of the community learning the craft from their families, describing it as a positive sign for the preservation of the historic industry.

Senator Tinubu said the existing infrastructure at the production site would be upgraded to better showcase the history and significance of the Akwete fabric, while calling on prominent sons and daughters of Igboland to champion its promotion on the global stage.

"I have heard your cry. Let Akwete be taken to the nations. I call on all notable sons and daughters of Igboland to rise and preserve this rich heritage," she said.

To support the initiative, the First Lady announced a donation of N2 billion to Abia State for the development of the Akwete production centre.

Earlier during the visit, Senator Tinubu was conferred with the traditional title of "Ugo Nwanyi of Abia" in recognition of her contributions and support for cultural preservation.

She was received at the historic weaving community by Abia State Governor Alex Otti and his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, alongside traditional rulers, political leaders, clerics and other dignitaries.
