Lagos Begins PMOD Consultancy for Omi Eko Project to Boost Modern Water Transport

 The Lagos State Government has officially commenced the Project Management, Operations and Design (PMOD) Consultancy for the Omi Eko Project, a major step towards delivering a modern, efficient and environmentally sustainable water transportation system across the state.

The Lagos State Government has flagged off the Project Management, Operations and Design (PMOD) Consultancy for the Omi Eko Project, reinforcing its commitment to transforming water transportation through modern infrastructure, electric ferry services and improved operational systems.

Speaking at the PMOD Consultancy Kick-off Meeting held in Lagos, the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the commencement of the consultancy as a significant milestone in the implementation of the Omi Eko Project.

According to him, the consultancy marks the beginning of a strategic partnership that will provide the technical leadership, operational guidance and project management expertise needed to ensure the successful delivery of the project.

Osiyemi said the Omi Eko Project is one of the most ambitious inland waterways transportation initiatives in Africa, aimed at improving connectivity, reducing travel time, enhancing passenger safety and stimulating economic activities across Lagos.

He added that the project would also promote environmental sustainability through the deployment of cleaner transport solutions, including electric ferry technology.

"The Omi Eko Project represents one of the most ambitious investments in inland waterways transportation in Africa. Beyond modern infrastructure and electric ferry technology, the project is designed to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, enhance passenger safety, stimulate economic activities and contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability through cleaner transport solutions," the commissioner said.

He noted that the responsibilities of the PMOD Consultant extend beyond project management and design, explaining that the consultancy would coordinate stakeholders, support implementation and help ensure the successful execution of the project.

The commissioner stressed that the success of the initiative would depend on strong collaboration among the Lagos State Government, development partners, consultants, contractors and host communities.

Osiyemi also expressed appreciation to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his continued support of the project, while thanking the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union (EU) for their partnership and confidence in Lagos State's vision for sustainable urban mobility.

He further commended the Omi Eko Project Team, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and other stakeholders for their commitment to advancing the project.

Speaking on behalf of the PMOD Consultancy, the Head of Delegation and Director of the International Unit at Planet SA, Mr. Dimitris Galanis, pledged the firm's commitment to delivering the assignment in line with international best practices.

Galanis said the consultancy would provide world-class project management, operational planning and technical expertise to support the successful implementation of the Omi Eko Project.

He added that the team would work closely with all stakeholders to deliver a safe, efficient and sustainable water transport system capable of serving millions of Lagos residents.

The Omi Eko Project is a flagship initiative of the Lagos State Government designed to revolutionise water transportation through modern infrastructure, electric ferry services and enhanced operational systems, while driving environmental sustainability and economic development across the state.
