 Lagos Lawmaker Jubril Kareem Earns PhD from Babcock University, Advocates Lifelong Learning

Member representing Agege Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Dr. Jubril Abdulkareem , has earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, urging Nigerians, particularly young people, to embrace lifelong learning as a pathway to personal growth and effective leadership.

ILISHAN-REMO, OGUN STATE – Member representing Agege Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Dr. Jubril Abdulkareem , has been conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by Babcock University, describing the accomplishment as the result of years of perseverance, sacrifice and dedication to academic excellence.

Dr. Kareem was among the doctoral graduates honoured during the university's 2026 convocation ceremony, attended by government officials, academics, professionals, family members and other dignitaries from across Nigeria.

Speaking with journalists after the ceremony, the lawmaker expressed gratitude to God for the successful completion of the programme, noting that the academic journey began in 2019 and demanded resilience despite his legislative responsibilities.

According to him, one of the biggest challenges he encountered was the prolonged reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which made regular trips to the university strenuous and time-consuming.

"The most difficult aspect of the journey was when the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was under reconstruction. Travelling became very tedious, but we found a way through it, and by the grace of God, today we are celebrating the successful completion of the programme," he said.

Kareem explained that his decision to pursue a doctoral degree was inspired by a commitment to continuous self-improvement and the belief that public office holders should constantly expand their knowledge to enhance their service to society.

"As a legislator, we believe we must continue to improve ourselves. We felt we could add to our knowledge, and that was why we embarked on this journey. Looking back today, we have no regrets. We are grateful to God for every step we have taken," he stated.

The lawmaker stressed that education should be viewed as a lifelong pursuit rather than a destination, saying intellectual growth extends far beyond formal academic qualifications.

"It is all about knowledge. When you are enthusiastic about learning, you always want to acquire new knowledge. As a Muslim, we believe that seeking knowledge is from the cradle to the grave. Even though we have acquired a PhD, it does not mean learning has ended. We will continue to learn because every day brings new ideas, innovations and experiences," he said.

He added that while the PhD represents the highest academic qualification for many scholars, the ever-evolving nature of society demands continuous learning and adaptation.

"The world is changing every day, and what is happening around us continually teaches us new lessons," he noted.

Addressing young Nigerians, Dr. Kareem encouraged them to cultivate a culture of lifelong learning, emphasizing that valuable lessons can be acquired both within and beyond the classroom.

"My message to the younger generation is simple: never stop learning. Learning is not limited to the four walls of a classroom. Every day, whether through what you see or experience, you learn something new. Continue learning so that you can grow with the world and remain relevant in a rapidly changing society," he advised.

Dr. Kareem's academic milestone highlights the growing commitment among public office holders to combine governance with scholarly advancement, reinforcing the role of education, research and continuous intellectual development in effective leadership.
