NUT Suspends Oyo Teachers' Strike, Directs Members to Resume Work July 2 After Government Security Assurances
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has suspended its statewide strike and directed public primary and secondary school teachers to resume work on Thursday, July 2, 2026, following fresh assurances from the state government on measures to improve security after the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has called off its industrial action and directed all public primary and secondary school teachers across the state to return to their duty posts from Thursday, July 2, 2026.
The decision followed renewed engagements with the Oyo State Government and a directive from the union's national leadership after reviewing the security situation arising from the recent abduction of teachers and learners in Oriire Local Government Area.
In a statement jointly signed on Wednesday by the Oyo State Chairman of the union, Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the Secretary, Comrade Olukayode Salami, the union said the suspension of the strike was in the collective interest of teachers, students and the general public.
According to the statement, the state government assured the union that sustained efforts were ongoing to secure the safe release of the kidnapped teachers and learners while implementing measures to strengthen security around schools and vulnerable communities.
The government also pledged to establish a well-equipped Joint Security Task Force to patrol schools and access roads, maintain regular engagement with affected families, provide psychosocial support and rehabilitation for rescued victims, and ensure payment of gratuities and other entitlements to the families of deceased teachers.
Other commitments include strengthening the Safe School Initiative through public sensitisation and early warning systems, improving emergency response mechanisms, dismantling criminal hideouts, upgrading school infrastructure, addressing illegal mining and open grazing in forest reserves, enhancing community intelligence gathering, ensuring speedy prosecution of criminal suspects, improving the welfare of security personnel, and deploying technology to enhance school security.
The union commended its members for their discipline and solidarity during the strike. It also praised the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) and the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON) for their support and cooperation throughout the industrial action.
While directing teachers to resume work, the union urged members to remain security-conscious, comply with all lawful directives, and promptly report suspicious activities or security threats within their schools and communities to the appropriate authorities.
The NUT reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and security of teachers, adding that it would continue to engage the state government until all outstanding concerns regarding the safety of teachers and students are fully addressed.
