 Oluremi Tinubu Hails Northern Derby as Key to Preserving Culture, Empowering Youth

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has described the Northern Derby as a vital platform for preserving Nigeria's cultural heritage, promoting national unity, and creating economic opportunities for young people. She made the remarks at the 44th edition of the Northern Derby held in Zaria, Kaduna State, where she was represented by the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima.

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has praised the Northern Derby for its enduring role in preserving cultural heritage and tradition while fostering youth empowerment and economic development.

Speaking through the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, at the 44th edition of the Northern Derby in Zaria, Kaduna State, the First Lady described the annual horse racing festival as a significant cultural institution that continues to unite people across Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.

She noted that beyond its sporting appeal, the event contributes meaningfully to job creation and entrepreneurship, particularly among young people.

"Today's event marks a celebration of sporting excellence and also a tribute to a rich heritage that has been passed down through generations. The Northern Derby stands as a proud symbol of our history, culture, and identity, bringing together horse racing supporters, traditional institutions, community leaders, and distinguished guests from across Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries," she said.

Senator Tinubu also paid tribute to the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and former Premier of the Northern Region, whose vision led to the establishment of the Northern States Turf Club Authority.

"I am particularly pleased to learn that this noble authority was established through the vision and foresight of the late Sir Ahmadu Bello. His commitment to preserving our cultural heritage and promoting unity continues to inspire us today," she added.

The First Lady commended the organisers for sustaining the event over the years and urged greater youth participation in horse racing and related activities.

"I commend the organisers for ensuring that this event remains a platform for preserving tradition while creating opportunities for young people to participate in sports, cultural activities, entrepreneurship, and community development," she said.

Earlier, Hajiya Nana Shettima, representing the First Lady, paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Zazzau and President of the Northern States Turf Club Authority, His Royal Majesty Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali, where she reiterated Senator Tinubu's commitment to supporting the continued growth of the Northern Derby.

In his remarks, the Emir appealed to the First Lady to champion the inclusion of horse racing as a recognised national sport, noting that such recognition would help engage young people positively and reduce youth restiveness.

He also called for increased efforts to promote Nigeria's rich cultural heritage, particularly among women and the youth.

The event concluded with the presentation of trophies and cash prizes to winners of the 44th Northern Derby, tagged Zaria 2026, celebrating excellence in one of Northern Nigeria's oldest and most prestigious horse racing competitions.
