'Policy Without Politics' Podcast Launches to Drive Non-Partisan Conversations on Governance, Economy
A new policy-focused podcast, Policy Without Politics (PWP), has been launched to promote informed, non-partisan discussions on governance, public policy and Africa's economic future, with a focus on how government decisions affect businesses, markets and the lives of citizens.
A new thought-leadership podcast, Policy Without Politics (PWP), has officially launched with a mission to deepen public understanding of the policies shaping economies, businesses, markets and everyday life across Africa.
Hosted by renowned financial expert Mustafa Chike-Obi and development economist Dr. Ken Ikpe, the weekly podcast seeks to bridge the gap between public policy and its real-world impact through fact-based, non-partisan conversations on governance, economic development and the business environment.
Available on YouTube, the podcast positions itself as a platform for objective analysis, connecting policy decisions made by governments to their effects on companies, investors, communities and citizens, while placing African issues within a broader global context.
Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, Dr. Ikpe said the podcast aims to make complex policy discussions more accessible to a wider audience.
"Policy touches every life, every business and every economy. Our goal is to make these conversations accessible, practical and useful, so that more people can understand how policy decisions translate into real outcomes," he said.
The debut episode, titled Policy vs Implementation: Why Nigeria's Good Ideas Keep Failing, examines one of Nigeria's long-standing development challenges—whether the country's setbacks stem from poor policy design, weak implementation, or a deeper problem of accountability and political will.
The discussion explores key national issues, including fuel subsidy removal, electricity pricing, health insurance, education, exchange rate management, telecommunications, IMF policy recommendations and social safety nets.
During the episode, Chike-Obi argued that economic productivity should take precedence over welfare spending.
"Charity is good, but you can only give charity when you have it. When you have limited resources, you must produce first, then be charitable later. Charity first never leads to production," he said.
Other episodes already produced cover topics such as the importance of independent economic advisers in national governments and the role of sports policy in national development. One episode, Why Do African Teams Concede in the 86th Minute?, uses football as a lens to examine discipline, execution, governance and the economic opportunities within the sports industry.
The introductory episode, Introducing PWP: Why Good Policy Fails to Change Lives, sets the tone for the series by examining why well-designed public policies often fail to improve citizens' lives.
The podcast draws on the extensive experience of its hosts. Chike-Obi is a veteran investment banker and former pioneer Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON). Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has held senior positions at global financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, Bear Stearns and Guggenheim Partners. He graduated with a First Class degree in Mathematics from the University of Lagos and obtained an MBA from Stanford University.
Dr. Ikpe brings over 30 years of experience in business leadership, brand management, advertising and economic advisory. He is the former Group Chief Executive Officer of Insight Redefini Group and holds a PhD in Development Economics from the Academy of Sciences, School of African Studies, Moscow. He is also associated with the School of Media and Communication at Pan-Atlantic University and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Marketing.
Explaining the philosophy behind the podcast, Chike-Obi said its focus is on practical solutions rather than partisan debates.
"We are not interested in politics for its own sake. We are interested in what works, why it works, why good ideas fail, and what must change if policy is to deliver real progress," he said.
