Power Minister Seeks Police Partnership, Plans Joint Task Force to Protect Nigeria's Power Infrastructure
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has sought stronger collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force to curb the vandalism of electricity infrastructure, announcing plans to establish a joint task force dedicated to protecting critical power assets across the country.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, on Tuesday visited the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja to strengthen collaboration between the Ministry of Power and the Nigeria Police Force in safeguarding the nation's electricity infrastructure.
Tegbe, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary and other senior officials of the ministry, stressed that the persistent vandalism of power installations remains one of the greatest challenges confronting Nigeria's electricity sector.
He commended the Nigeria Police Force for its performance under the current administration, particularly since the appointment of IGP Disu, and urged the Force to intensify surveillance of critical power facilities across the country.
The minister also called for sustained cooperation between the Ministry of Power and the Police to improve the protection of electricity infrastructure, which is essential to ensuring reliable power supply and supporting ongoing reforms in the sector.
Responding, IGP Disu thanked the minister for the courtesy visit and described the engagement as a welcome step toward strengthening inter-agency collaboration.
The police chief reaffirmed the Force's commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure, including power installations, while pledging continued efforts to combat vandalism and prosecute those responsible for attacks on electricity assets.
He also expressed readiness to work with the Ministry of Power to establish a joint task force dedicated to protecting power infrastructure nationwide.
According to the IGP, the Nigeria Police Force will continue to provide adequate security for power sector personnel and installations, given their strategic importance and vulnerability to criminal attacks.
The meeting underscores the Federal Government's efforts to enhance energy security through stronger collaboration among relevant agencies, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
