Zenith Bank Posts Strong Q1 2026 Results, Expands Across Africa, Strengthens Best-in-Class Status
LAGOS — Zenith Bank Plc has reinforced its position as one of Nigeria's strongest financial institutions, combining robust first-quarter 2026 financial results with an aggressive Pan-African expansion strategy and international recognition that underscores its growing influence across the continent.
The lender, recently named both Africa's Best Bank and Nigeria's Best Bank at the 2026 Euromoney Awards for Excellence, posted a profit before tax of ₦361 billion for the three months ended March 31, 2026, representing a three per cent increase from the corresponding period in 2025. The result marked the highest absolute pre-tax profit among Nigeria's leading Tier-1 banks.
The bank's unaudited financial statements also showed strong growth across key performance indicators, including net interest income, fee and commission income, shareholders' equity and customer deposits, reinforcing its reputation for operational efficiency and prudent capital management.
Zenith Bank's total assets stood at ₦32.01 trillion at the end of the first quarter, while customer deposits increased by 7.9 per cent year-on-year to ₦24.47 trillion. Shareholders' equity climbed 16.3 per cent to ₦5.17 trillion, reflecting sustained earnings retention and a strengthening capital base.
The bank also continued to improve asset quality despite expanding its lending portfolio. Gross loans and advances rose 8.6 per cent year-on-year to ₦12.04 trillion, while net loans increased 13.2 per cent to ₦11.38 trillion.
Its non-performing loan ratio improved to 3.79 per cent at the end of March 2026, compared with 4.70 per cent at the close of 2024, demonstrating continued progress in credit risk management even as lending activities expanded.
Zenith Bank's revenue profile also became more diversified during the period. Net interest income grew 7.3 per cent to ₦634.1 billion, while net fee and commission income recorded a sharp 44.6 per cent increase to ₦81 billion, reflecting stronger earnings from digital banking, transaction services and card businesses.
The lender maintained its reputation for delivering strong returns to shareholders. Following its record performance in 2025, the bank doubled its total dividend to ₦10.00 per share, distributing approximately ₦410.7 billion, one of the largest dividend payouts in Nigeria's corporate history.
Its capital position also remained among the strongest in the banking industry. The bank reported a capital adequacy ratio of about 25 per cent at the end of 2025, comfortably above regulatory requirements. Independent projections by CardinalStone Research indicate the ratio could rise further to 28.7 per cent in 2026 and exceed 30 per cent in 2027.
Beyond its financial performance, Zenith Bank accelerated its continental expansion during the year.
In April 2026, the bank completed the acquisition of Paramount Bank Kenya Limited, providing it with a strategic entry into East Africa's banking market.
The bank also launched its subsidiary in Côte d'Ivoire, establishing its first presence in Francophone West Africa and gaining direct access to the eight-member West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) market.
Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Adaora Umeoji, said the bank's expansion reflects its long-term ambition of building a globally competitive African financial institution.
"We are committed to building a truly African global financial institution that delivers exceptional value to customers and stakeholders across our markets," she said.
Zenith Bank is also preparing for a planned listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2027, a move aimed at expanding access to international capital and supporting larger cross-border financing opportunities.
The bank's international ambitions have been matched by growing global recognition. At the 2026 Euromoney Awards for Excellence held in London, Zenith Bank emerged as both Africa's Best Bank and Nigeria's Best Bank, becoming the only Nigerian lender to secure both honours simultaneously.
The latest awards add to an extensive list of recognitions, including being ranked Nigeria's number one bank by Tier-1 Capital for 17 consecutive years by The Banker magazine, alongside multiple Bank of the Year and Best Bank in Nigeria awards from leading international financial publications.
With a resilient balance sheet, improving asset quality, diversified revenue streams, strong capital buffers and an expanding international footprint, Zenith Bank continues to strengthen its position as one of Africa's leading financial institutions while reinforcing investor confidence in its long-term growth strategy.
