 Birthday Tribute: Hon. Hassan Adekoya — A Determined Public Servant Making a Difference

As Hon. Hassan Adekoya, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Lagos State on Transportation and Logistics, marks his birthday, his contributions to transportation, maritime-related activities, public welfare and community development deserve recognition.

Popularly known as “Mr. Gridlock,” Adekoya has distinguished himself through his determination to confront challenges within the transportation ecosystem and his persistent commitment to ensuring that things are done properly.

For many stakeholders in the maritime and transport sectors, his intervention in facilitating the free flow of traffic around the port corridor has been particularly significant. His efforts have contributed to reducing avoidable bottlenecks and improving movement along one of the most important economic corridors in Lagos.

Beyond traffic management, Adekoya has also demonstrated a strong interest in initiatives that directly affect the welfare of workers and residents. Among such interventions is the facilitation of 10,000 free eyeglasses, providing much-needed support to beneficiaries who otherwise might have struggled to access proper eye care.

His concern for the wellbeing of those who keep the state's transportation system running has also been evident in health initiatives targeting truck drivers and police officers across Lagos State and Abuja, through medical examinations and health checks designed to promote healthier and safer communities.

Another notable initiative associated with his efforts is the facilitation of the CNG truck project for truck drivers, undertaken in partnership with United Bank for Africa (UBA). The initiative reflects the growing need for cleaner, more economical and sustainable alternatives within Nigeria's transportation and haulage sector while also creating opportunities for truck operators.

These interventions, among others, point to a public servant who sees his responsibilities beyond the confines of an official position. They reflect an approach centred on identifying problems, engaging stakeholders and pursuing practical solutions.

For me personally, Hon. Hassan Adekoya is my personal person — someone whose doggedness, persistence and determination to see things done the right way I deeply admire.

His willingness to keep pushing even when the process is difficult, his insistence on getting things right and his commitment to finding solutions to challenges are qualities worthy of celebration.

As he adds another year, the celebration is therefore not merely about his birthday. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge the impact of his service and the people who have benefited from his interventions across the transportation, maritime and wider public-service space.
