 Female Driver Dies as Vehicle Crashes into Building in Mongoro, LASTMA Warns Against Speeding

A female motorist has died after her vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a building at Mongoro, inward Ile-Zik, along one of Lagos' busiest roads, prompting the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to renew its warning against excessive speeding.

According to LASTMA, the tragic lone-vehicle crash occurred over the weekend when the deceased, who was driving a Toyota Sienna with registration number LND 162 HB, reportedly lost control of the vehicle before it left the carriageway and rammed into a roadside building.

The impact of the collision was described as severe, killing the driver instantly. She was the only occupant of the vehicle.

LASTMA said its officers, who were on routine patrol in the area, responded immediately after receiving reports of the crash. The officials secured the accident scene by placing safety cones around the affected section of the road and directed traffic to prevent congestion and secondary accidents during the evacuation process.

The agency noted that although the incident temporarily disrupted traffic flow, the prompt intervention of its personnel ensured that normal vehicular movement was restored within a short time.

Security operatives from the Afonka Police Post under the Shasha Divisional Police Headquarters also provided security at the scene until the evacuation exercise was completed.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the fatal crash as a painful reminder of the dangers of excessive speeding and reckless driving.

He stressed that speed limits are designed to save lives and urged motorists to exercise patience, caution and strict compliance with traffic regulations.

"Every journey must be undertaken with prudence, patience and an unwavering commitment to established traffic regulations. No destination is worth the ultimate sacrifice of human life. Excessive speed remains one of the foremost causes of fatal road traffic crashes and motorists must, at all times, exercise the highest degree of caution, restraint and responsibility while behind the wheel," Bakare-Oki said.

The LASTMA boss also advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on any trip, urging drivers to stop using any vehicle that develops mechanical faults until it has been properly repaired.

The agency expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the repose of her soul, while urging all road users to prioritise safety and responsible driving to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
