Globacom Leads Nigeria’s Internet Subscriber Growth, Adds 1.2 Million Users in May
Globacom recorded the highest growth in internet subscribers among Nigeria’s major telecommunications operators in May, adding about 1.2 million users as the country’s total internet subscriber base rose by 2.67 million during the month.
Latest figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showed that Nigeria’s internet subscriber base increased from approximately 154.3 million in April to 157 million in May.
Globacom accounted for nearly half of the industry’s monthly growth, increasing its internet subscriber base from about 15.5 million in April to 16.8 million in May.
Airtel Nigeria recorded the second-highest growth during the period, adding approximately 1.07 million subscribers to reach 55.8 million, compared with 54.8 million in April.
MTN Nigeria also recorded growth, adding 382,894 internet subscribers to increase its customer base from about 83.1 million in April to approximately 83.5 million in May.
However, T2 Mobile, formerly known as 9mobile, recorded no growth for the second consecutive month. Its internet subscriber base remained unchanged at 802,534.
The development comes nearly a year after the NCC approved T2 Mobile’s national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria, an arrangement expected to expand coverage and improve service delivery for subscribers.
Globacom Expands Network Infrastructure
Globacom’s latest subscriber growth comes amid an ongoing network expansion and modernisation programme aimed at improving connectivity and service quality across Nigeria.
The company has continued to deploy new base stations to extend network coverage to additional locations while increasing capacity in densely populated areas to support growing demand for voice and data services.
Globacom is also expanding its fibre-optic infrastructure and relocating fibre facilities in areas affected by major road construction projects in a bid to minimise disruptions to telecommunications services.
The operator has further rolled out thousands of new 4G LTE sites across major cities and communities, strengthening network reach in both urban and rural areas.
The investments are expected to improve customer experience through faster data speeds, broader coverage and greater network reliability.
Globacom’s performance in May underscores the increasingly competitive nature of Nigeria’s telecommunications market, with operators investing heavily in infrastructure and network upgrades to attract new customers and retain existing subscribers.
