 Oyo Gives Residents One Month to Provide Waste Bins, Begins House-to-House Enforcement September 1

The Oyo State Government has announced plans to commence house-to-house enforcement of mandatory waste bin provision for residential and commercial buildings across the state, giving residents and property owners a one-month compliance window before strict enforcement begins on September 1, 2026.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, disclosed the development while addressing journalists in his office, describing the initiative as part of the government's renewed efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation and improve waste management across the state.

According to Aderinto, every household, residential building, business premises, shopping complex and plaza must provide appropriate waste bins based on the size of the property, the number of occupants and the volume of waste generated.

He also directed residents and business owners to patronise only government-accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs) responsible for waste collection and evacuation. He warned that anyone engaging unapproved waste contractors or disposing of refuse through unauthorised means would face legal sanctions.

The commissioner advised residents experiencing challenges with waste collection services or those unsure of accredited PSP operators to contact the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA) or the Department of Environmental Health Services under the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources for guidance.

Aderinto further disclosed that enforcement teams would verify evidence of payment of waste evacuation fees during inspections, stressing that residents and businesses must remain up to date with their monthly waste disposal payments as part of the compliance requirements.

He explained that the exercise is an extension of the state's daily environmental sanitation programme, noting that compliance goes beyond owning a waste bin and engaging an accredited PSP, as property owners are also expected to maintain clean surroundings.
