LAGOS — The 82nd birthday celebration of elder statesman and prominent Lagos politician, Senator Anthony Adefuye, was marked by a series of activities that brought together political associates, football personalities, family members, friends and supporters to celebrate his life, contributions and enduring influence on Lagos politics.

The week-long celebration began on August 12, 2026, with a novelty football match featuring former Super Eagles international players and Bariga All Stars.

The former Super Eagles players were led by former Lagos State Football Association Chairman and ex-international, Waidi Akanni, while the Bariga All Stars side was led by former Paris Saint-Germain player and Super Eagles international, Godwin Okpara.

The novelty match formed part of activities organised to honour Senator Adefuye, who clocked 82, while also providing an opportunity for sports personalities and political associates to celebrate the elder statesman in a convivial atmosphere.

The football activities continued with competitive matches involving female and male teams. In the women's category, Phoenix Queens of Apapa-Iganmu faced Victory FC of Ikorodu, while the men's final featured Brave FC of Mushin and Melody FC of Yaba.

Political Associates Celebrate Adefuye's Leadership Legacy

The main birthday celebration on August 14 attracted political leaders, candidates and associates from Shomolu, Lagos State and beyond.

Chairman of the birthday planning committee, Hon. Kolade David Alabi, commended members of the committee for the successful organisation of the celebration, noting that the large turnout of political leaders and stakeholders was evidence of effective planning and coordination.

Alabi also paid tribute to Senator Adefuye's role as a political mentor and leader, stressing the need to preserve and strengthen the political structures around him so that his wealth of experience could continue to benefit younger generations.

He called for the establishment of a dedicated committee to support the senator's mentorship efforts and prayed for continued strength, good health and longevity for the elder statesman to enable him mentor more emerging leaders, particularly in Shomolu.

The Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, Hon. Bayo Adefuye, who is the first son of the celebrant, also reflected on his father's life, leadership and political influence.

He described Senator Adefuye as an accomplished leader whose impact extends beyond his immediate family, noting that several politicians who occupy prominent positions today had benefited from his mentorship and political guidance.

According to him, the family was delighted to celebrate the senator's productive life, achievements and contribution to the development of future generations.

Senayon James Hails Adefuye

Also in attendance was the incoming Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Hon. Mrs. Senayon James, who described Senator Adefuye as a man of the people whose accommodating disposition and willingness to assist others had earned him the respect and affection of his political associates.

James praised the senator for his commitment to his political family, particularly his readiness to guide, encourage and support those who regard him as a political mentor.

African Watch Network Honours Elder Statesman

The celebration continued on August 15 with African Watch Network's special programme in honour of Senator Adefuye.

The organisation celebrated the elder statesman and unveiled the 12th edition of its memoir, focusing on election integrity and security.

The event provided another platform for stakeholders to reflect on the importance of credible elections, democratic values and security, while recognising Senator Adefuye's long-standing contributions to public and political life.


Thanksgiving Service Caps Celebration

The birthday activities culminated on August 16 with a thanksgiving service at St. Dennis Cathedral, Akoka.

Family members, friends, political associates and well-wishers gathered at the church to offer prayers and thanksgiving for Senator Adefuye's life and 82 years of service, leadership and mentorship.

The gathering also provided an opportunity for those close to the elder statesman to celebrate his enduring legacy and express appreciation for his contributions to political development and the growth of younger leaders.

The series of events, spanning sports, political gatherings, a civic-focused programme and a thanksgiving service, underscored the breadth of Senator Adefuye's relationships and influence across politics, sports, family and community life as he marked his 82nd birthday.
