Union Bank Secures PCI DSS v4.0.1 Certification, Strengthens Payment Data Security
Lagos, Nigeria — Union Bank of Nigeria has attained certification under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) version 4.0.1, reinforcing its commitment to protecting customers’ payment card information and strengthening its defences against financial fraud and data breaches.
The certification, which took effect on August 11, 2026, confirms that the bank’s payment card systems and processes meet the rigorous technical and operational requirements of the globally recognised PCI DSS framework.
PCI DSS establishes security requirements for organisations that store, process or transmit payment card account data. Compliance is designed to protect sensitive card information and enhance confidence in the security of payment transactions.
The assessment covered key areas of Union Bank’s operations, including network infrastructure, card issuance, ATM and point-of-sale (POS) transaction acquiring and payment processing, reconciliation, settlement, chargeback, dispute resolution and retail banking.
The bank was assessed and certified under the Service Provider category.
According to the bank, the certification followed a year-long engagement involving quarterly assessments and the participation of departmental, business and functional heads across the organisation, with technical support from cybersecurity firm Digital Encode.
The final independent audit was conducted by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor.
Commenting on the achievement, Union Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Yetunde B. Oni, said the certification underscores the bank’s commitment to safeguarding customer information.
“The security of our customers’ information is central to everything we do at Union Bank. This certification reaffirms that our payment systems and processes meet a rigorous global standard, and it reflects the discipline of colleagues across the Bank who work every day to keep customer data safe,” Oni said.
The renewal also ensures that Union Bank maintains uninterrupted PCI DSS certification, in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirement for banks to sustain continuous compliance without any gap.
The latest certification further positions Union Bank to maintain robust security controls across its payment infrastructure while strengthening customer confidence in the safety and integrity of its digital and card-based transactions.
