Argungu Visits Site of Proposed Police Service Commission Institute in Kano, Praises Momentum in Police Oversight

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, has paid a surprise visit to the site of the proposed Police Service Commission Institute located in Kabo, Kano State. 

In a press release signed by PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani and made available to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP), the visit took place on Saturday, September 28, 2024. The statement highlights that the institute, once officially passed into law by the National Assembly and signed by the President, will serve as an international training hub for the PSC staff in their oversight roles over the Nigerian Police Force.

According to the Constitution, the PSC is responsible for overseeing appointments, promotions, dismissals, and disciplinary actions within the police force. The Commission is also tasked with formulating and implementing policies to ensure the smooth functioning of these duties.

Speaking at the Kabo site, DIG Argungu noted that the Commission’s oversight functions are gaining renewed energy, and the Institute will provide world-class training opportunities for staff to align with international corporate governance standards. He emphasized that the facility, once operational, would be free from corruption and meet global standards, positioning Nigeria as a leader in police oversight. Additionally, the institute will welcome trainees from other nations with similar institutions.

Argungu expressed satisfaction with the facilities already in place and commended Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Madori, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, for spearheading the bill that supports the Institute’s establishment. He described the project as an innovative and progressive move that could revolutionize police oversight not just in Nigeria but across the globe.

The PSC chairman reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to seeing the Institute become a reality, calling it "Nigeria's gift to the world in the area of police oversight."
