Nigeria Customs Service Leads Discussion on Climate Change Mitigation at Kaduna Retreat
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit Zone B Kaduna, took a leading role in addressing climate change during a 3-day retreat held at the National Teachers Institute (NTI) in Kaduna. The retreat, themed *“Youth Involvement in Tackling Climate Change in Our Community,”* ran from October 6 to 9, 2024, and was jointly organized by the Red Cross Kaduna North Division and the NCS as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
In a keynote presentation delivered on October 8, 2024, Comptroller Ahmadu Bello Shuaibu of the Federal Operations Unit Zone B Kaduna highlighted the Nigeria Customs Service’s critical role in combating climate change. As a signatory to several Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), the NCS plays a vital part in supporting renewable energy initiatives, promoting sustainable trade practices, and combating wildlife trafficking. Comptroller Shuaibu stressed the need for collaboration among stakeholders to address the global climate challenge effectively.
The presentation also underscored the devastating impacts of climate change on Nigeria's ecosystem, economy, and society, including rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and increased frequency of extreme weather events. Shuaibu pointed out the significant challenges Nigeria faces in mitigating climate change, such as a lack of comprehensive climate policies, reliance on fossil fuels, deforestation, and limited public awareness.
The retreat served as a platform for discussing innovative strategies for climate change adaptation and mitigation, with a focus on sustainable agriculture, renewable energy solutions, and eco-friendly policies. The event concluded with participants planting trees, symbolizing their commitment to environmental sustainability.
By hosting this event, the Nigeria Customs Service, in collaboration with the Red Cross Kaduna North Division, reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement, marking a significant step in Nigeria's fight against climate change.
