E-Call Up System Set to Alleviate Traffic Congestion in Ibeju-Lekki: Lagos State Government Collaborates with Key Stakeholders

*Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos* – In a proactive move to address potential traffic congestion in the fast-developing Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with Ibeju-Lekki LGA and Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), held a critical stakeholders meeting on traffic management. The gathering, which took place at the new Eleko Ultra-Modern Complex, centered on the management of fuel tankers and other large vehicles frequenting the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, opened the event by emphasizing the importance of taking proactive steps to mitigate traffic gridlock in the area. He highlighted the new electronic call-up system as a key solution, noting that it would regulate the influx of trucks within Lekki LCDA and surrounding areas, aiming to prevent significant traffic congestion.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Lekki LCDA, Hon. (Engr.) Rasak Bamidele Kasali, expressed concern over the rapid increase in vehicles along the corridor. He underscored that unresolved traffic issues could have negative impacts on residents’ livelihoods and called for immediate action by all stakeholders.

Representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Special Adviser on Transportation Hon. Olusola Giwa extended his congratulations to Ibeju-Lekki and Lekki LCDA communities for their development strides. He assured residents that adequate preparations have been made to handle the anticipated influx of trucks and heavy vehicles in the area. Giwa elaborated on the electronic call-up system, explaining that it will allow only authorized trucks with legitimate business to access the Lekki Free Trade Zone, thereby managing traffic flow effectively.

Giwa also issued a strong warning to traders and residents who occupy roadsides for business, urging them to utilize government-designated complexes. He further cautioned against illegal practices such as renting private compounds for fuel tankers, which could lead to heightened congestion and community risks.

The E-call up system, a traffic management tool, is designed to streamline truck movement in the area. Under this system, a designated park will house waiting trucks, and drivers will be assigned a sequence order before proceeding to their destinations, thereby reducing road blockages caused by idling trucks.

The event brought together several prominent attendees, including Hon. Isiaka Yusuf Olatunji, Vice Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government; legislative council members; cabinet members; former Lagos State House of Assembly member Hon. Raheem Kazeem Adewale; traditional royal fathers; and other key community leaders. Representatives from the Federal Road Safety Corps, led by Commander ACC Abayomi; the Nigerian Police Force, represented by CSP Solomon Komolafe; the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA); market associations; and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) were also in attendance, reflecting a strong and united approach to tackling the issue.
