18 Rescued in Major Accident on Third Mainland Bridge
In a dramatic rescue operation, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in collaboration with emergency response agencies, saved 18 victims from a serious accident on the Third Mainland Bridge near Ilaje, heading towards Iyana Oworonsoki.
Among the rescued were a newlywed couple returning from the Ikoyi Marriage Registry, adding a deeply emotional dimension to the tragic incident.
Accident Details
The accident occurred when a commercial LT bus (BFG 204 XF) lost control due to brake failure and collided with a mini truck (AGL 22 YE) that was moving slowly due to mechanical issues. The LT bus, reportedly speeding, struck the truck, resulting in significant damage and injuries.
The crash left 16 passengers—11 women and 5 men—seated at the rear of the LT bus with various injuries. Emergency responders quickly transported them to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre near the Toll Gate on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for immediate treatment.
Two additional passengers seated at the front of the bus were trapped in the wreckage, suffering severe limb fractures. They were extricated by LASTMA personnel, emergency responders, and concerned bystanders, and rushed to Gbagada General Hospital for specialized care.
Swift Emergency Response
The rescue operation was facilitated by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASABUS) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit (LRU). Their coordinated efforts ensured that all casualties received timely medical attention.
Security personnel from Alonge Police Station and operatives of the Lagos State Task Force provided critical support, maintaining order at the accident scene during the rescue.

Expressing concern for the victims, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended his sympathies and wished them a speedy recovery. He emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits and maintaining vehicle safety standards, particularly the braking system, to prevent such tragedies.
Mr. Bakare-Oki also highlighted LASTMA’s ongoing public enlightenment campaigns, led by the Female Elite Corps, aimed at educating motorists—especially commercial bus drivers—on safe driving practices during and beyond the festive season.
