First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Urges Elderly to Prioritize Health, Spend Quality Time with Loved Ones

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on elderly citizens to prioritize their health and spend quality time with their loved ones. She made this statement during the 2nd edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), held simultaneously across all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and for military veterans.
This year’s scheme, which has the theme “Total Wellness – Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous Lifestyle,” supports 250 elderly beneficiaries per state, FCT, and veterans. Each beneficiary received a grant of ₦200,000, marking an increase from last year’s ₦100,000. Additionally, participants were provided with free medical check-ups and food items.
In her address, the First Lady emphasized that the program is designed to reassure elderly citizens of their importance and ensure they are not forgotten, particularly during the festive season.
“The Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative has decided to increase the grant from ₦100,000 to ₦200,000 this year to further support our elderly citizens. A total of ₦1.9 billion will be disbursed nationwide,” she announced.
Mrs. Tinubu reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's commitment to the welfare of all Nigerians and urged citizens to maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle.
In his remarks, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, encouraged Nigerians to support President Tinubu’s administration, noting that significant progress is being made to address inherited challenges. He further announced that the Defence Ministry would provide additional support to 250 veterans, each receiving ₦200,000.
Dr. Matawalle commended the First Lady for her continuous support for veterans and their families through the Renewed Hope Initiative, describing the program as one that “touches the lives of ordinary Nigerians in remarkable ways.”
The Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme featured free medical check-ups, distribution of food items, and financial grants aimed at improving the well-being of elderly citizens.
