Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Embarks on Beach Cleaning and Community Sanitation Campaign
In a bid to promote cleanliness and environmental sustainability, the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has launched a community-wide sanitation initiative, focusing on the popular Eleko Beach and the surrounding areas. The exercise was spearheaded by the Environmental Health Officers, Environmental Task Force, and the Ibeju-Lekki Community Corps (Folumo), reflecting the local government's commitment to ensuring a clean and healthy environment for residents and visitors.
The joint operation included thorough inspections and cleaning of the Eleko Beach, a major tourist attraction, and extended to other parts of the town. Shop owners, vendors, and tourist coordinators participated actively in the exercise, which combined practical clean-up activities with sensitization on proper waste disposal methods.
As part of the campaign, the team encouraged community members to adopt the use of the Garbage Collection Tricycle, popularly known as Keke Jaja, for efficient waste management. Waste bags were also distributed to shop owners and residents to facilitate proper bagging and disposal of refuse.
Speaking during the event, members of the Environmental Task Force highlighted the importance of maintaining a clean environment, particularly in areas with high tourist traffic like Eleko Beach. They stressed that cleanliness is essential not only for aesthetic purposes but also for the health and well-being of the community.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Akadiri Ayorinde, noted that the exercise is part of a broader effort to position Ibeju-Lekki as a clean and eco-friendly destination. “This initiative underscores our dedication to maintaining a hygienic environment for both residents and visitors. We are committed to ensuring that Ibeju-Lekki remains a model for sustainable tourism and environmental care,” he stated.
The campaign was documented with videos and photographs to showcase the collective efforts of the local government, residents, and stakeholders in achieving a cleaner, more sustainable Ibeju-Lekki.
