LASTMA Cracks Down on Traffic Violators, Impounds 173 Vehicles for Illegal Parking, Road Obstruction in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria – In a decisive move to restore traffic order and improve vehicular movement in Lagos, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has intensified its enforcement drive, impounding 173 vehicles—125 commercial buses and 48 private cars—for illegal parking and road obstructions.

The large-scale crackdown targeted notorious traffic congestion hotspots, including Idumota, Ijaye Street, Martins, Ereko, Nnamdi Azikiwe by Tom Jones, Ebute-Ero, Oyingbo, Ijora, Adeniji Adele, and Iddo. LASTMA operatives apprehended drivers violating road laws, with some caught engaging in reckless practices such as driving against traffic (one-way) and making dangerous reversals to pick up passengers. These infractions, officials say, have contributed to frequent road accidents and unnecessary loss of lives.

Sustained Effort to Tackle Gridlock

LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who led the operation under the directive of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, stated that the enforcement aligns with the Lagos State Government’s commitment to traffic discipline.

“The government is determined to eliminate illegal garages and unauthorized parking, which have become a major cause of gridlock and hardship for road users,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He reaffirmed that the crackdown is not a one-time exercise but part of an ongoing effort to ensure traffic compliance across the city.

The initiative has received widespread approval from commuters and business owners, who have noted a significant improvement in traffic flow. Many expressed optimism that sustained enforcement will help curb the indiscriminate activities of commercial bus operators and private motorists who routinely obstruct the roads.

LASTMA has assured Lagosians that the operation will be extended to other areas plagued by illegal parking and traffic violations.
