LASTMA Rescues Eight Injured in ‘Molue’ Accident at Hammadiya

A major road traffic accident involving a commercial long bus, popularly known as a ‘Molue,’ occurred on Friday at Hammadiya, inward Abule-Egba, Lagos, leaving eight passengers injured and disrupting traffic flow in the area.

The incident, which involved a bus with registration number KTU 801 XM, was reportedly caused by excessive speed and driver impatience. According to eyewitness accounts, the bus driver lost control while attempting to avoid colliding with another LT commercial bus and pedestrians standing at the roadside. The sharp maneuver caused the bus to crash into the expressway median and overturn, leaving several passengers injured, while others escaped through the windows.

Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) promptly arrived at the scene to coordinate a swift rescue operation. A total of eight passengers, including five men and three women, were injured in the crash. Among them was the driver, who sustained a fractured left arm.

The injured were immediately handed over to LASAMBUS medical personnel and transported to the General Hospital at Ile-Epo for urgent medical care.

To restore normal traffic flow and ensure public safety, LASTMA’s Response Unit worked efficiently to remove the overturned vehicle from the road. The operation was supported by officers from the Meran Police Division, who provided security to ensure an unhindered rescue effort.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his sympathies to the injured passengers and wished them a speedy recovery. He reiterated the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, particularly speed limits, to prevent such accidents.

“Drivers must prioritize safety over haste. Strict compliance with traffic rules and regular vehicle maintenance, especially for critical systems like brakes, are non-negotiable,” Bakare-Oki stated.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the need for collective responsibility in ensuring safety on Lagos roads. LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to saving lives and fostering safe road usage through proactive interventions and collaboration with emergency response agencies.
