Senator Tokunbo Abiru Empowers Over 1,000 Farmers in Lagos East
In a bid to enhance agricultural productivity and contribute to food security, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, representing Lagos East Senatorial District, has empowered over 1,000 farmers with critical farm inputs.
The distribution event, held within the senatorial district, saw farmers receiving fertilizers, land tiller machines, crop sprayers, Agric Zymes, and Ag Zymes to support their farming activities.
Speaking on behalf of the Senator, his Special Adviser on Constituency Matters, Dr. Saheed Oladapo Ibikunle, noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda on food security. He emphasized the importance of strategic support for farmers as a sustainable solution to the nation’s food insecurity challenges.
“These farm inputs will not only enhance growth on your farms but also improve your family livelihoods and contribute significantly to the national economy. This effort will boost Lagos State’s and Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” Ibikunle stated.
Representing the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, Mr. Arutu Ademola commended Senator Abiru for his unwavering support for farmers. He also lauded President Tinubu for prioritizing agricultural development as part of his administration’s agenda.
The South West Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Otunba (Dr.) Femi Oke, expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries. He announced plans by the association to organize a special farm produce exhibition, where farmers would sell their harvests at discounted prices to the public, further reflecting the positive impact of the initiative.
“We are grateful for Senator Abiru’s continuous support. Thanks to his interventions, farmers in this senatorial district are achieving remarkable results. By April, we will showcase our bountiful harvests and sell them at farm gate prices as a gesture of appreciation,” Oke said.
This latest intervention adds to Senator Abiru's track record of supporting farmers in Lagos East. Previous initiatives include the distribution of fertilizers, seedlings, and herbicides to over 300 crop farmers, as well as the provision of fully vaccinated chickens, feeds, and cages to more than 100 poultry farmers. The Senator has also facilitated the creation of farmers' cooperatives to improve access to funds for agribusiness operations.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Alhaji Jimoh Tijani, Hon. Princess Adebimpe Akinsola, Dr. Hakeem Adetugbobo, Alhaja Sherifat Abiodun Ogunniyi, Alhaji Sulaimon Musiliu, Bishop Olajide Odusoga, Aarebirin Folashade Olabanji-Oba, and Alhaji Toyin Gbadamosi, APC LGA Chairman, Epe.
This initiative underscores Senator Abiru’s commitment to empowering farmers and ensuring food security across Lagos East Senatorial District and beyond.
