Nigeria Customs Seeks Stakeholder Support for Authorised Economic Operator Programme Launch
Speaking at a sensitisation programme held in Lagos on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, represented by Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) Kingsley Egwuh, highlighted the critical role of partnerships between Customs and businesses in ensuring the programme's success.
The AEO programme, which began its pilot phase on April 15, 2024, involved six companies from various sectors. According to ACG Egwuh, the pilot phase provided valuable feedback on stakeholders’ expectations, helping the NCS refine the programme for its full implementation.
“During the pilot, beneficiaries reported significant benefits such as improved clearance processes and cost savings. While challenges remain, they are surmountable through enhanced collaboration and coordination with partner government agencies,” Egwuh noted.
He assured stakeholders that the NCS is committed to addressing their concerns and ensuring a seamless transition to the programme’s full rollout. Egwuh also emphasised the importance of compliance, urging businesses to take ownership of their responsibilities under the programme.
“Many companies will qualify for this scheme when it officially launches. However, compliance is key. Businesses must self-audit and ensure adherence to regulations. You know the law; you don’t wait for Customs to remind you,” he added.
Stakeholders commended the NCS for its efforts in modernising trade facilitation and enhancing transparency within the trading ecosystem. They expressed optimism that the AEO programme would provide significant benefits, including reduced delays, improved predictability, and enhanced trade competitiveness.
The AEO programme, a global initiative endorsed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), is set to officially launch on February 14, 2025.
This initiative underscores the NCS’s commitment to creating a more efficient and secure trading environment, positioning Nigeria as a hub for international trade.
