PSC Appoints Banji Lawal as DIG Representing South West
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of AIG Banji Badaru Lawal, formerly in charge of Border Patrol at Force Headquarters, Abuja, as the new Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) representing the South West geopolitical zone.
The decision was made during an extraordinary meeting held on Friday, January 17, 2025. DIG Lawal succeeds DIG Sylvester Abiodun Alabi, who retired on December 31, 2024. Until his retirement, DIG Alabi was in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
DIG Lawal brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in several key positions within the Nigeria Police Force. His previous roles include Commandant of the Police Training College in Ikeja, Lagos; Assistant Commissioner of Operations in Ekiti, Abia, and Edo States; and Area Commander in Uyo. He also held senior operational roles in Nasarawa and Akwa Ibom States, as well as administrative positions at Force Headquarters, Abuja.
In addition, DIG Lawal has served as Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration in various capacities, including ICT at Force Headquarters, Benue State Command, and the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano. His last posting was as Commissioner of Police in charge of General Investigation at the Force Criminal Investigation Department.
During his screening before the PSC, DIG Lawal underwent written and oral examinations and highlighted the success of the Nigeria Police Force’s Community Policing program, which he commended for its significant achievements.
PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd.), alongside other commission members, congratulated DIG Lawal on his promotion. Argungu urged him to make himself indispensable within the Police Management Team and wished him success in his new role.
The appointment underscores the PSC’s commitment to strengthening the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
