Lagos Commissioner for Tourism Seeks Immigration Collaboration to Boost Tourism Influx

Abuja, Nigeria – The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, has initiated discussions with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to enhance ease of entry into Lagos, Nigeria’s leading tourism and business hub.

During a courtesy visit to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, on Friday, the commissioner emphasized the importance of a seamless entry process for visitors arriving through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA). The meeting was set against the backdrop of a highly successful fourth quarter of 2024, which witnessed an impressive surge in tourism activities across Lagos.

Strengthening Immigration Processes for Tourism Growth

The engagement between both officials centered on identifying key areas of collaboration to streamline entry procedures, reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, and improve the overall travel experience for tourists and business travelers.

Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka highlighted Lagos' growing reputation as a top-tier destination for entertainment, culture, and business, citing recent landmark events, festivals, and global conferences that attracted visitors from across the world. She stressed that simplified immigration procedures would encourage even greater numbers of international tourists, boosting the state’s economy and reinforcing its status as West Africa’s commercial and cultural capital.

“We are witnessing a steady rise in tourist arrivals due to Lagos’ dynamic and vibrant cultural scene. To sustain this growth, we must ensure that visitors experience a seamless entry process upon arrival,” she stated.

Nigeria Immigration Service Pledges Support

Responding to the commissioner’s concerns, Comptroller General Kemi Nandap assured her of the NIS’s readiness to work closely with Lagos State to facilitate efficient and tourist-friendly immigration procedures. She acknowledged the vital role Lagos plays in Nigeria’s economic development and tourism industry, pledging to explore measures such as enhanced visa-on-arrival processes, digital entry clearance, and improved passenger processing at the airport.

“We recognize Lagos as Nigeria’s gateway for tourism and business. As a service, we are committed to making the immigration process as smooth as possible while maintaining national security,” Mrs. Nandap affirmed.
