Lagos Government Warns Motorists Against Paying Touts for Illegal Parking

Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to motorists against making illegal payments to street urchins for unauthorized parking on bridges and open spaces across the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, condemned the practice, stating that such illicit transactions contribute to traffic congestion and disrupt the free flow of movement within the metropolis.

Illegal Parking Worsening Traffic Gridlock

Reports indicate that private vehicle owners have been engaging in unauthorized arrangements with touts to secure illegal parking spaces at various strategic locations in Lagos.

Hon. Giwa emphasized the need for strict compliance with government-installed road signage, which clearly designates “No Parking” zones across the state. He highlighted that disregarding these regulations not only leads to gridlock but also undermines the government’s efforts to maintain order on Lagos roads.

He specifically identified Ebute-Ero, Ejalonibu, Adeniji-Adele, Oyingbo, Oworonsoki, Iyana-Ipaja, and Medical Road near Computer Village as some of the worst-hit areas where vehicles are illegally parked, often obstructing traffic and causing undue hardship for road users.

Government to Enforce Strict Measures

Reaffirming the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to a well-organized traffic system, Hon. Giwa warned that the government will not tolerate illegal parking or motorists who claim to have paid touts for such infractions. He cautioned that offenders will face strict enforcement measures, including vehicle impoundment and possible prosecution.

Call for Compliance

The Lagos State Government has urged all motorists to adhere to established traffic regulations and refrain from engaging with unscrupulous individuals who exploit public spaces for personal gain.

The government assured residents that law enforcement agencies, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), will continue to clamp down on illegal parking and take necessary actions to ensure safer, more efficient road usage in the state.
