LAWMA Intensifies Waste Management Enforcement, Urges Residents to Shun Cart Pushers

Lagos, Nigeria – In a renewed effort to combat indiscriminate waste disposal and ensure a cleaner environment, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its enforcement and clean-up operations across the state.

The agency’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to maintaining environmental sustainability, stressing that monitoring and enforcement teams had been mobilized to ensure strict compliance with Lagos State’s waste management regulations.

Crackdown on Illegal Waste Disposal

Dr. Gbadegesin stated that LAWMA is resolute in eliminating illegal waste dumping and environmental violations. He highlighted the ongoing operations of LAWMA’s Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Anti-Cart Pushers Squad, which has been actively dislodging illegal waste operators who contribute to environmental degradation.

“We urge residents to stop patronizing cart pushers, as they engage in indiscriminate dumping, which violates environmental laws and undermines our efforts to maintain a clean and livable city. Instead, Lagosians should work with registered Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators for proper waste disposal,” he stated.

Target Areas and Cleanup Operations

The enforcement team recently carried out major operations in areas including Ifako-Ijaiye, Dopemu, Agege, Ojodu Berger, and other parts of Lagos, where cart pushers were apprehended for illegally collecting and dumping waste at unauthorized locations.

Additionally, LAWMA has commenced the evacuation of waste from illegal dumpsites along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, particularly behind Circle Mall, and has extended cleanup activities to Mile 2 on the Badagry Expressway. These operations, aimed at clearing accumulated waste, removing silt from medians and verges, and preventing indiscriminate dumping along highways, will continue in the coming weeks.

Cleaning Up Lagos Waterways

As part of its broader environmental initiative, LAWMA has also intensified efforts to clean up Lagos waterways, ensuring that rivers and water bodies remain free of waste and blockages. This initiative aims to reduce pollution and promote cleaner water channels across the state.

Call for Residents’ Support

Dr. Gbadegesin urged Lagosians to support LAWMA’s initiatives by disposing of waste properly, reporting service gaps, and contacting the agency for backup waste collection services.

“A cleaner Lagos is achievable when everyone plays their part. We urge residents to work with assigned PSP operators, report waste-related infractions, and adopt responsible waste disposal habits. Together, we can create a cleaner, healthier city for all,” he added.
