NIMASA Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Nigeria’s Maritime Industry

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has restated its commitment to creating a level playing field and fostering a business-friendly environment in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

Speaking during a meeting with the Executive Members of the Nigerian Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, emphasized that the agency is implementing strategic initiatives under the supervision of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, led by Hon. Adegboyega Oyetola, to enhance local participation and attract investment in the industry.

Boosting Indigenous Participation in Maritime Business

Dr. Mobereola revealed that NIMASA is intensifying collaboration with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) to introduce policies that will strengthen indigenous involvement in the maritime sector.

“The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy is committed to encouraging Nigerian players to invest more in the maritime industry. National carriers and trade terms remain key priorities under this administration,” Mobereola stated.

He added that NIMASA is engaging with the NCDMB and NNPC Limited to address critical industry challenges and ensure the sector remains attractive to private investors.

Calls for More Opportunities for Nigerian Seafarers

In his remarks, Comrade John Aleakhue Okpono, Secretary General of the Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association, called for closer collaboration between NIMASA and the Merchant Navy. He also urged the agency to review waiver clauses to create more employment opportunities for Nigerian seafarers.

Echoing this commitment, Osagie Edward, Head of Public Relations at NIMASA, emphasized that the agency remains focused on fostering strategic partnerships to drive local investment, job creation, and sustainable growth in the maritime industry.

The meeting, held at NIMASA’s headquarters in Lagos, had in attendance key officials, including Executive Director of Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services, Jibril Abba, Executive Director of Operations, Engr. Fatai Taiye Adeyemi, and other stakeholders.
