Senator Oluremi Tinubu Hosts Diplomatic Spouses, Seeks Partnership on Education and Social Welfare

Abuja, March 14, 2025 – Nigeria is making steady progress under the current administration, and with the right internal and external support, the country is poised for significant transformation, says First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.  

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Spouses of Heads of Missions to Nigeria at the Presidential Villa, the First Lady emphasized her commitment to advancing education, healthcare, and livelihood improvements through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).  

Highlighting the issue of out-of-school children, particularly the Almajiri system, Senator Tinubu stressed that while the challenge is daunting, it is not insurmountable.  

> "Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa, and we have about 18.5 million children without formal education," she stated. "These children seek Islamic education but lack basic support. Our vision is to establish boarding schools that will provide them with both religious and formal education while addressing their welfare needs."  

She further noted that tackling this challenge requires a step-by-step approach, adding that her initiative is actively seeking partnerships to address the issue.  

The First Lady thanked the visiting diplomats’ spouses for their contributions to Nigerian women and children, acknowledging that women play a critical role in nation-building.  

Leading the delegation, Mrs. Sigalit Freeman, wife of the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, commended Senator Tinubu’s long-standing commitment to public service. She noted that their group, which includes the wives of the Guinea Bissau and Canadian ambassadors, is dedicated to supporting vulnerable groups across Nigeria.  

> "We have been actively involved with widows, schools for children, and hospitals in Abuja," Mrs. Freeman said. "This year, we are prioritizing education and seeking collaborations to expand our impact."  

As part of their efforts, the group is set to host a fundraising gala to support educational initiatives across the country.  

A Call for Global Partnerships

The First Lady reiterated her willingness to collaborate with international partners to improve education and social welfare in Nigeria.  

> "We are hopeful and taking bold steps to address these challenges. Any support we receive will make a difference in the lives of millions," she added.  

The meeting underscores ongoing diplomatic efforts to foster development partnerships that will enhance the well-being of Nigerian children and women.
