Wike’s Aide Slams Bayelsa Governor Over Security Alert on Alleged Mega Rally

ABUJA – The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lere Olayinka, has dismissed Governor Douye Diri’s security concerns over an alleged planned mega rally in Bayelsa State, describing them as "shamefully baseless."

Olayinka’s response follows claims by Governor Diri that a rally and the inauguration of a group loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, were being planned in the state, raising security concerns.

Reacting to the governor’s remarks, Olayinka said it was unfortunate that a state leader would raise an alarm over an event that citizens had the right to organize. He argued that if Wike were to attend any political rally in Bayelsa, he would personally inform security agencies, as he had nothing to hide.

"It is shocking that a governor, with all the security apparatus at his disposal, would go on national television over mere suspicion of people planning a rally. Nigerians are free to express their support for anyone, anywhere, and anytime," Olayinka stated.

He further questioned whether Governor Diri was afraid of Wike, adding, "Is this how governance in Bayelsa State has become—calling Security Council and Elders Council meetings over a mere political rally?"

Olayinka also recalled Wike’s past support for Governor Diri’s reelection bid, claiming that Diri had once sought Wike’s backing but was now attacking him.

"When he was seeking reelection, this same Diri was brought to Wike by the Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Lokpobiri, alongside David Lyon. He knelt before Wike, pleading for support, and Wike even told him, ‘No, don’t do that, you’re a governor.’

"Shamefully, the same Wike he once begged for help has now become the one he disparages to cover up his inadequacies. It is unfortunate how some people lack conscience," Olayinka added.

The statement comes amid political tensions between the two leaders, fueling speculation over ongoing power struggles within the South-South region.
