Democracy Day: FRSC Boss Shehu Mohammed Urges Nigerians to Be Safety Conscious

As Nigerians commemorate the 2025 Democracy Day on Thursday, June 12, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has called on all citizens to prioritize safety and show greater care and responsibility on the roads during the public holiday.

The admonition was contained in a press statement signed by the FRSC Spokesperson, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, and made available to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP).

Corps Marshal Mohammed noted that national holidays, particularly Democracy Day, often witness a surge in human and vehicular movement as people travel to visit family, friends, and loved ones. He warned that without proper caution, this increase in road usage could lead to preventable accidents and fatalities.

“Past records have shown that public holidays such as Democracy Day attract heightened road usage, often accompanied by disregard for traffic rules,” Mohammed said. “We therefore urge motorists to avoid reckless behavior and adhere strictly to road safety guidelines.”

He emphasized that road users must act with consideration for others, recognizing that road safety is a shared responsibility. “Let us all drive with the consciousness that the road is shared by many. Orderliness and consideration are key to maintaining a stable and safe environment,” he added.

The Corps Marshal reminded citizens that the Federal Government declared Thursday a work-free day to promote peaceful reflection and celebration of 26 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria, not to create chaos or endanger lives.

“That jubilant atmosphere must not be marred by road mishaps caused by reckless driving and the abuse of traffic rules,” he warned.

Mohammed further urged Nigerians to avoid drunk driving, drug use behind the wheel, and driving against traffic — common causes of road crashes during festive periods.

“As you observe the day, we enjoin everyone to show sincere commitment to safety regulations by driving responsibly. Avoid impaired driving and always obey traffic rules,” he said.

While congratulating the nation on over two decades of democratic governance, Mohammed assured the public that the FRSC remains fully committed to ensuring a safe motoring environment during and beyond the Democracy Day holiday.

He concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and accident-free celebration, noting that “it is only the living that can celebrate.”
